BAIC Grows Roots in South Africa

Founded in 1958, BAIC (Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation), is one of China’s leading automobile manufacturers, ranked 162nd on the Fortune 500 list. BAIC is the market leader in new-energy vehicles with more than 360 sales and service outlets in over 30 countries worldwide. BAIC South Africa, established in 2016, is committed to developing and expanding the African market, with a network of 27 dealerships throughout the country.

In November 2022, it was confirmed that the South African BAIC facility would produce the BEIJING X55, the new flagship model for the BAIC brand, at its Eastern Cape plant, located in the Northeastern part of Gqeberha’s Coega Industrial Development Zone.

“We consider South Africa our second home and we have a strong loyalty to this country and to the local communities in which we operate. We are in the business of creating mobility for our customers, but we also work every day to create upward mobility for the South African economy,” said Buhle Hanise, Chief Financial Officer for BAIC South Africa.

The BEIJING X55 is the company’s innovation-driven compact SUV, the first product of the ‘Beijing Benz’ alliance, a partnership between Beijing and Daimler. The car features electrification, intelligence, connectivity, and advanced technology, built on the latest generation BMFA (Beijing Modular Functional Architecture) platform, underpinning future vehicle development, including plug-in hybrid and EV derivatives.

A Futuristic Design

The BEIJING X55 boasts a sleek design with a sporty edge. Its lightning-shaped LED headlamps and bumper, which almost blend into the car, along with its flush door handles, make it look super futuristic. The SUV is also very spacious with plenty of storage space. Its luxurious interior, including Lamborghini design-inspired seats, offered in different colour variations, makes it rather welcoming.

Outstanding Performance Guaranteed

The BEIJING X55’s award-winning engine offers outstanding performance and fuel efficiency. Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 130 kW of power and 305 N.m of torque paired to a 7-speed DCT transmission, sending power to the front wheels.

It also earned a C-NCAP Five-star Safety rating and is equipped with a wide range of active and passive safety features for added peace of mind.

Affordable Price Point

The Bejing X55 goes up against the likes of the Haval H6, Hyundai Tucson and the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro. The BEIJING X55 II is BAIC’s latest SUV offering available in three trim levels, namely Dynamic, Elite, and Premium. Find out more or book your Bejing X55 test drive!
